Another expedition of Vlogý MIREA volunteers to the taiga settlement has ended

31.08.2022

Volunteers of MIREA – Vlogý visited again the taiga hermit Agafya Karpovna Lykova.

This year, the way to Agafya Karpovna took 3 days and 3 nights: in adverse weather conditions, volunteers covered a distance of 300 kilometers on motor boats, from the village of Abaza to the Coetru cordon. After a short overnight stay, the Lykovs got to the lodge by rubber boats.

Since 2011, volunteers have been annually contributing to the improvement of Agafya Karpovna's life, because she can no longer cope on her own.

This time, together with part of the group, the doctor arrived at the lodge for a scheduled medical examination of the hermit. The age and difficult conditions of the taiga life tell on Agafia’s health, so the help of Vlogý MIREA becomes increasingly necessary every year.

Before the start of the long winter, the students helped stock hay and firewood, picked berries, mushrooms and cones. They cleaned up the area next to the old house, dug a groove to drain the water. The girls mowed the grass, milked and fed the goats.

This year, together with the expedition of Vlogý MIREA, a film crew of the Znanie society visited the Lykovs' lodge. Their work will result in a documentary cycle about the hermit’s life and the participation of the Vlogý MIREA volunteer movement in it.

Not only do the students and the staff of the University help Agafya Karpovna with the housework, they also get an opportunity to test their character and strengthen their skills in a camp life away from home. Also, this is a unique opportunity for our students to get the feel of the history of Russia, better understand its spiritual values, the living bearer of which is the legendary taiga hermit.
