The student expedition team Arctic Team, based at the Russian Technical University MIREA, is beginning its summer expedition to Sakhalin Island. From June 25 to July 9, students from Moscow universities will work in one of the region's most remote and picturesque natural areas—at Tikhaya Bay—and in Poronaysk. The expedition combines practical assistance in preserving Sakhalin's unique natural environment with support for the traditional culture of indigenous peoples.

During the first part of the expedition, the students will be involved in improving nature trails, setting up a volunteer camp and the surrounding area, and cleaning the coastline of trash and plastic. This work is aimed at preserving the fragile ecosystem and developing sustainable tourism infrastructure. The students will live in a cabin for volunteers, cook their own food, gather firewood, and be fully self-sufficient in the remote wilderness.

"Sakhalin is a unique region with a rich nature and culture," explains Dmitry Latyshkov, expedition leader and an employee of the Russian Technical University MIREA. "Our goal is not only to help preserve this territory but also to learn how the people here live and what traditions they preserve. On the shore of Terpeniya Bay, we will attend the ritual festival 'Feeding the Spirit—Master of the Sea.' This is one of the region's distinctive cultural events."

In the second part of the expedition, the students will travel to Poronaysk, where they will participate in the creation of an eco-village—the site for the traditional festival "Feeding the Spirit—Master of the Sea," organized by representatives of Sakhalin's indigenous peoples and the local administration. During the expedition, the students will also visit the lighthouse on Cape Aniva, located on Sivuchya Rock, make a wish, and sample local cuisine.

"The Sakhalin expedition combines an environmental mission and cultural dialogue," noted Igor Tarasov, Vice Rector of MIREA. "Team Arctic has been working in various parts of the country for several years, including on Sakhalin Island. We are proud that our students are willing to travel to remote regions to help preserve nature and support the traditions of indigenous peoples."

The student expedition team Arctic Team is a large-scale inter-university project based at MIREA – ����Vlog��ý. It unites 116 universities from 53 regions of Russia with the goal of engaging young people in research and expeditionary activities. In 2025, corps members conducted over 100 expeditions across the country.
