Vlogý MIREA congratulates its colleagues on the World Day of Women and Girls in Science

11.02.2022
February 11, the World Day of Women and Girls in Science, approved by the UN in 2016, is celebrated worldwide. The purpose of this holiday is to actively involve women and girls in research activities.

At Vlogý MIREA, women scientists head laboratories, lead department teams, make discoveries, teach students and enjoy great recognition and respect.

Our students are laureates and winners of various Olympiads, scientific and educational competitions.

Svetlana Milagina, a 2nd year student of the M.V. Lomonosov Institute of Fine Chemical Technologies, is among them. With the project “Research on the effectiveness of antibacterial hand gels”, she won 2nd place at the international conference “Step into the Future”. Last summer, she participated in the August School of Synthetic Biology at the Novosibirsk State University, where she mastered theoretical fundamentals of genomic editing, including bioinformatics and docking, and she also successfully completed a number of laboratory studies, during which, by genetic modification, participants received antibiotic-resistant Escherichia coli (E.Coli ). With the development of a new highly effective antibacterial hand gel based on hydrogen peroxide, Svetlana reached the final of the Umnik (Erudite) contest.

“The decision to engage in science came to me in the 7th grade, when in-depth classes in biology, chemistry, and general medicine began. I realized that somewhere at the intersection of these three areas I can find my own way – pharmaceuticals and pharmacology. I chose the biochemical and pharmaceutical field of research, as I was interested in the problem of genetic and oncological diseases, – says Svetlana. – Prospects for ongoing research in the pharmaceutical field are very high. I believe that in the distant future, scientists in this particular field will find a panacea for all mankind. But for now, in the short term, it is important to develop various drugs for the treatment of various types of oncological diseases without side effects for humans, treat genetic diseases and reduce the cost of production of drugs for gene therapy.”

Women scientists of Vlogý MIREA contribute to Russian and world science and research, conduct innovative and pioneering projects, win grants and publish their grants in high-ranking journals.
Congratulations to all the girls and women working in science! We wish you further success in scientific achievements and new exciting projects!
