On May 25, in the Small Concert Hall of Vlogý MIREA, as part of a project to popularize and promote the Russian language and culture, the premiere of the play “The Master and Margarita” took place, staged by the student theater group of the Institute of International Education. During the six-month preparation for the performance, students from the Russian Federation, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Belarus, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, Syria and Tajikistan studied the famous novel, wrote the script according to the pages of the work, learned to understand the features of the author's dramaturgy, thought through the scenography, mastered the art of recitation, got familiarized with the famous theatrical and film productions of the novel, and also visited the memorable places of Bulgakov's Moscow: the Patriarch's Ponds, the building of the Variety Theater and the “bad apartment No. 50”, which houses the museum of M. A. Bulgakov.
The one-act performance plunged the audience into the multi-layered plot of the work, interspersing philosophy and humor, the pathos of tragedy and the lightness of vaudeville. The minimalistic design of the theatrical scenery successfully emphasized the frailty of the material world, focusing on the classical issues of the existence of the spirit.
The characters of the novice actors turned out to be textured: ironic, wise, attractive, evoking admiration due to their realism. An interactive game with the audience in the scene of the black magic session in the Variety Theater can also be called a good find. The main action took place not on stage, but in the auditorium, when suddenly the students began to find decks of cards and fake exemptions certificates from the physical culture and sports classes in the pockets of their clothes, and after Fagot's remarks to requests for exposing tricks by the actors of the theatrical group, a scandal broke out in the audience. Thus, all those present in the hall were involved in the wonderful world of Bulgakov's magic.
The final scene, Satan's ball, amazed the audience with the dynamism and beauty of the dance of the guests of the ball, the well-chosen makeup emphasized the main idea of the author of the novel about the perishability of being and the immortality of the spirit. Superbly selected musical accompaniment accompanied the performance, famous melodies sounded from the stage, both recorded and played on the piano, and video clips from the feature film “The Master and Margarita” successfully complemented what was happening on stage.
The work of the costume designer was especially noted: in the performance, items of clothing from the 1930s were used, the chitons for the scene of the interrogation of Christ were made according to the illustrations from the World History of Fashion.
Director of the performance based on the legendary novel by M.A. Bulgakov “Master and Margarita” is Zhanna Olegovna Moskvina, professor of the Department of Russian (as a foreign language).
