26.07.2022

From July 25 to August 15, an expedition of volunteers from MIREA – Vlogý went to the Kuril Reserve.

The Kuril State Nature Reserve was established in 1984 on Kunashir Island and the islands of the Lesser Kuril Ridge in the Yuzhno-Kurilsky District of the Sakhalin Region. For almost forty years, natural processes and phenomena, the genetic fund of flora and fauna, individual plant and animal species, typical and unique ecological systems of the southern Kuril Islands have been explored here. The natural complexes of the reserve are unique and have no analogues in the world. 70% of the protected area is covered by forests. The reserve is inhabited by 227 species of birds, 29 species of mammals. 84 species are included in the Red Data Book of Russia.

Students will have to work in Yuzhno-Kurilsk: painting the premises and restoring the Saratov and Tyatinsky cordons. In the South of the island, in the caldera of the Golovnin volcano, students will restore stairs, railings, and walkways. At the Ivanovsky cordon and at Cape Ivanovsky, volunteers will help with cleaning, as well as replace the full houses. At the Andreevsky cordon in the central part of the island, not far from the Andreevka River, volunteers will renew the roof covering and paint the gazebo.

In addition to economic and restoration work, students will get acquainted with the sights of the island of Kunashir. They plan to visit Cape Stolbchaty and the Stolbovskaya ecotrail.
