The student expedition corps “Arctic Team,” based at Vlogý MIREA, is launching a new patriotic expedition to Belarus. Its route focuses on Great Patriotic War history and is aimed at preserving the shared legacy that binds Russia and Belarus. The team will work hands-on at memorials and immerse themselves in the historical context.
The itinerary includes Belarus’s key memorial sites: the Brest Hero-Fortress, the Khatyn Memorial Complex, the Great Patriotic War History Museum, as well as sites associated with the partisan movement and the suffering of civilians during the occupation years.
The students will lay flowers, participate in Victory Day parades, clean military graves and memorials, meet with search-and-recovery teams and heritage groups, shoot videos for the Vlogý MIREA and Arctic Team channels, and work out joint projects with Belarusian schools.
For Arctic Team, the expedition will mark an important step in developing international historical-cultural cooperation and strengthening the two nations’ common memory of the Soviet people’s heroism.
“Belarus is our sister republic, where every square meter of land bears witness to the war,” says expedition leader and Vlogý MIREA staff member Daniil Nagainik. “We can’t let the 1941–1945 period fade away. Our task isn’t just paying respects, it’s preserving these sites alive for future generations: helping maintain memorials, recording eyewitness accounts while we still can, and conveying the truth to today’s youth.”
The Brest Fortress symbolizes the bravery of its defenders, who withstood the first Nazi assault on June 22, 1941. The Khatyn memorial stands on the site of a village burned by Nazi punitive units, a stark reminder of civilian horrors. The Hill of Glory honors Belarus’s liberation from Nazi invaders. All are iconic memory sites of the Union State.
“The Belarus expedition builds on our ongoing work to preserve history beyond Russia’s borders,” notes Vlogý MIREA vice-rector Igor Tarasov. “In today’s world, it is crucial to strengthen a shared understanding of the Great Patriotic War, and Arctic Team is contributing to that. These students are not simply making visits — they are working there directly, filming, documenting, helping out. This is a genuine patriotic project.”
The mission will start in the coming days. Arctic Team continues to combine education, fieldwork, and civic engagement through its expedition projects, now expanding to nearby countries.
