Arctic Team Prepares for the Start of the Summer Season: Students to Embark on Expeditions from the Baltic Sea to the Commander Islands

26.05.2026
The Student Expeditionary Corps "Arctic Team," established at Vlogý MIREA, is entering the most active phase of its summer season. In June, corps members will conduct more than 10 large-scale expeditions across the country — from the Kaliningrad region to the Amur region, and from the Solovetsky Islands to the Commander Archipelago. Students can look forward to conservation area improvement works, scientific research, participation in historical reenactments, and international cooperation.

The June expedition program covers nearly all time zones of Russia. In the northwest of the country, corps members will once again head to the Solovetsky Islands, where they will work on improving the grounds of the Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery. Expeditions to the Solovki have become a tradition for the "Arctic Team": students regularly help in the restoration and improvement of the monastery.

In the Kaliningrad region, at the Curonian Spit National Park, the corps will continue its multi-year work on preserving the ecosystem of this protected area. Students will also travel to the Katunsky Biosphere Reserve in Altai — a destination with which the "Arctic Team" has a long history of cooperation. The first group of volunteers from Vlogý MIREA came to the Katunsky Reserve back in 2016, and since then, around 100 students have taken part in projects in this specially protected natural area.

The Far Eastern direction is represented by several locations at once. The "Arctic Team" will go to the Zeya State Nature Reserve in the Amur Region — one of the most inaccessible corners of the Amur area. This expedition follows trips in 2024 and 2025, during which students were already involved in restoring the reserve's infrastructure. This time, participants will clear and mark tourist trails, as well as assist in the repair of ranger stations.

A special place in the program is occupied by the expedition to the Commander Islands: on Medny Island, a scientific expedition will be conducted to assess the population size of Arctic foxes, which is of great importance for preserving the biodiversity of the remote archipelago. On Bering Island, in addition to territory improvement, students will also carry out a census of these animals.

Also in June, an expedition to the Nenets State Nature Reserve will commence, where corps members have already assisted local specialists on multiple occasions. Furthermore, students can look forward to a trip to "Zapovednoe Podlemorye" — a unique natural area on the shores of Lake Baikal.

One of the key events will be a career-guidance expedition aboard the research and expedition vessel "Mikhail Somov" — the flagship of the Northern Administration for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring. Over several weeks, students will carry out a range of tasks to supply polar stations with fuel, provisions, and building materials. On the White Sea, a regatta will take place in the Kandalaksha Gulf, where students will participate in sailing competitions.

In June, the "Arctic Team" will continue to develop international cooperation. The expedition to Slovakia will be a continuation of a tradition established in previous years. In 2025, students already visited Bratislava, where they participated in meetings with young activists and studied cultural heritage. Their trip was filled with a historical and cultural program. In the new season, participants can once again expect meetings with foreign partners and joint projects.

In addition, students will take part in an international patriotic reenactment of the defense of the Brest Fortress, which brings together young people from different countries and allows the memory of heroic pages of history to be preserved through live action.

"Expeditions in June are a busy period of the year for our team. We work literally on all fronts: ecology, history, science, and international cooperation. It is gratifying that many of these trips — for example, to the Solovki, to the Katunsky Reserve, and aboard the vessel 'Mikhail Somov' — are becoming traditional. This means we are not just participating in projects on a one-time basis but are building long-term professional and friendly ties on the ground," said Vlogý MIREA Vice-Rector Igor Tarasov.

Participants face intensive work: repairs and construction, clearing ecological trails, scientific research, educational lectures, and media content creation. The "Arctic Team" continues to shape a new generation of researchers and patriots ready to preserve Russia's natural and historical heritage through their labor.

The Student Expeditionary Corps "Arctic Team" is a large-scale inter-university project based at Vlogý MIREA. To date, it unites 116 universities from 53 regions of Russia. The main goal of the corps is to involve young people in research and expeditionary activities, contributing to a deep understanding of their native country and the world. Project participants engage in a wide variety of work: from cleaning Arctic territories to search expeditions and ethnographic research.
