On February 1, the NumbaLab training laboratory began its work for the students of Vlogý MIREA. The laboratory was created on the basis of the departments KB-4 “Intelligent Information Security Systems” and KB-14 “Digital Data Processing Technologies” of the Institute of Cybersecurity and Digital Technologies.
In early March, recruitment to the laboratory started, and students of the 2nd and 3rd year were selected. Future programmers will learn GameDev while using Unity, studying testing fundamentals, game design, design doc and more, as well as practicing teamwork in the course projects implementation. Students are recruited to the laboratory upon the results of questionnaires and interviews. This academic year, it is also planned to launch the web development project.
This year, the laboratory staff of lecturers and instructors will conduct online courses and offer open lectures, organize webinars on game development and “atypical” nuances of the Python programming language. Upon the results of the courses and in conformity with the preferences of the students that are to be identified by that time, a decision will be made to launch a new project.
Arslan Tarlanov, professor and founder of the KB-4 department, spoke about about the format of the laboratory’s work: “Students are divided into teams of 2-4 people and start working on the project. Each team performs its part within the master plan of the laboratory. Meetings are held periodically for members of all teams, where problems, ideas, scenarios, etc. are discussed in order to get advice, criticism, opinions – whatever may prove useful to create a quality product. This approach is aimed at improving communication skills, motivation and involvement in the process. Students will have to test the results obtained by other teams. Our task is to bring the project implementation as close to real life conditions as possible, including project management tools. We hope that our students, having completed the training, will make a good contribution as young and energetic researchers to the staff working in the IT field.”
A team of lecturers and scholars from the departments of KB-4 and KB-14 started working with students long before the official opening of the laboratory. A number of students have been taking internships in Russian IT giants for a year now, they work on projects and receive salaries.
