Volunteers of Vlogý MIREA took part in the forest regeneration in Peschanaya Bay

29.07.2022

Volunteers of the MIREA – Vlogý volunteer project are returning from the Pribaikalsky National Park, which is part of the Lake Baikal UNESCO World Natural Heritage site. This specially protected natural area of federal significance includes the largest protected area of the Baikal coastline (almost a quarter of its entire length). It is via this park that the main flow of tourists passes when visiting Baikal, so the help of Vlogý MIREA volunteers here is always in demand.

For ten days running, our students helped the inspectors of the Pribaikalsky reserve in the work on the improvement of the reserve. In the first part of the trip, volunteers stood in Malaya Peschanaya Bay and cleaned up there. The students collected and removed more than 10 bags of rubbish and erected a special outbuilding to keep the parking lot and bay clean.

During the second part of the trip, the volunteers of Vlogý MIREA moved to the cordon of the Khargino reserve and worked there preparing firewood, animal feed (brooms), putting in order buildings that needed repair.

Volunteers lived in a tent camp and cooked food on fire. The students also provided assistance to the park staff in creating the infrastructure for ecological tourism – arranging an ecological trail.

Trips to Lake Baikal have become traditional in the program of summer volunteer expeditions of Vlogý MIREA. Our volunteers started to take care of this unique piece of nature in 2015. For several years, students have been engaged in landscaping and cleaning up the territory on Olkhon Island. In 2019, the ecological trail “In the wilds of Khamar-Daban” was built as part of the international ecological volunteer project of the Association “Great Baikal Trail”. The stunning landscapes of Peschanaya Bay will remain in the memory of our volunteers forever.
